  The beautiful Buttermilk Trail is one of many dog-friendly trails that meander throughout the landscape of James River Park, a collection of public lands that border the James River. Stretching 2.5 miles, the Buttermilk Trail traverses rugged, hilly woodlands on the south side of the river and is accessible at multiple trailheads, including the Reedy Creek Trail Parking Lot on Riverside Drive. From the Buttermilk Trail, hikers can also access other riverfront spots like Belle Isle and Mermaid Rock. Dogs must be leashed at all times.

  Richmond's premier membership-based dog park, Ruff Canine Club is arguably the best place in the city to let dogs run freely off the leash. The club is conveniently located in Scott's Addition and offers monthly and yearly memberships as well as day passes, which offer an ideal option for newcomers and out-of-towners.   One of the most popular outdoor adventure outfitters in Richmond, RVA Paddlesports provides canoes, kayaks, float tubes, and stand-up paddle boards for rent. RVA Paddlesports also offers guided rafting and paddling trips on the James River, and dogs are welcome to come along for the ride.
