Fall Home

The air is crisp, and the leaves are changing colors – there's no doubt that fall is here! When outside temperatures drop, you want the inside of your house to feel comfortable and warm. Luckily, there are some simple ways you can change and update your interior design to make your home more comfortable and cozy for the fall months. Here are a few ideas from our real estate agents.

  • Bring in Some Natural Color Tones
You don't have to completely change your home's color scheme to include more fall colors. Muted green, tan, and cream all have fall-like vibes, and they coordinate well with many existing color palates. You could add cream and green throws to the backs of your chairs or add a few tan candle holders to your mantel.

Another easy way to incorporate more fall colors is with your drapes or curtains. Look for a set in your favorite fall tones, and put them up just for the season. This also encourages you to wash or clean your curtains more often – a chore people often put off.

  • Use Candles for a Warm Mood
Fall is the perfect season to light some candles. They give off a soothing, warm glow and are perfect for evenings once the sun starts setting earlier in the day.

Look for candles decorated with burlap, pine cones, or even acorns for an even more autumnal look. And, of course, you'll want scents that remind you of fall, such as apple pie and pumpkin.

  • Decorate With Mums
Mums are the quintessential fall flower, and they happen to thrive both indoors and out. Their orange, yellow, and muted red blossoms help add a touch of fall-like color to any space.

Put a few decorative pots filled with mums next to your living room doors or even on the table in your kitchen or dining room. You could also put potted mums on your patio. They'll survive the winter if you bring them inside, and then you can plant them permanently in your flower beds once spring comes.

  • Layer Your Decor
When fall comes, people often begin wearing layers to stay warm and cozy. You can replicate this idea with your decor.

Add burlap runners to your tables, and set your usual decorations on top of them. Put a new, shaggy area rug under your coffee table in the living room. You could also use light to create a layered effect. A few sconces to shine light down on your paintings or wall art instantly make a space feel warmer and closer.

  • Decorate With Darker Colors
Fall doesn't always have to be about orange and yellow. Dark colors like really deep blue and forest green can also evoke that comforting, natural appeal you're chasing.

If you have time for a bigger project, painting an accent wall in a deep tone can help bring autumnal character into the space. Or, you could purchase dark furniture covers and use them to temporarily add these darker hues.

  • Add More Pillows
Sometimes, all it takes to bring a fall attitude to a living room is the right pillows. Don't just pick ones that are the right color, either. Choose ones with a long, shaggy texture or even a quilted texture.

A few throw pillows can make your bedroom look and feel more fall-like, too.

With these tips, you can quickly elevate the fall character of your home. Have a happy fall, and don't forget to contact us if you're looking for Richmond homes for sale or Petersburg homes for sale during this season.
